Geo-mapping using Nokia E71
November 15th, 2008 by Sharat | Filed under GPS, Mobile Phones.I have been using the Sportstracker application on my Nokia E71 to measure the time and distance of my rather infrequent morning walks.
I discovered that the Sportstracker software allows the export of the information related to speed, distance, time etc in various formats; one of them being Google Earth. While I was able to upload this file to My Google Maps, a quick web search revealed a host of plugin that allow the exported KML files to be displayed as a customized google map within a WordPress post. I have downloaded and activated a plugin called XML Google Maps to show my morning walk track on a map of my neighbourhood below:
Here is another KML file showing the route that I took from home to work, again captured using Nokia Sportstracker, except that I did not walk or run but sat comfortably in the car:
Yet another exciting use for my E71 !
Check out the maps above in the “Earth” view. You will need a Google Earth plugin for the browser. Works currently only with IE6, IE7 and Firefox, but the 3D view rocks.

Hi.
I am planning buying the e71 and now, with this post, I am quite sure that this is the phone i need. Indeed, I am a runner and this application seems to be perfect !
Do you still use it ? Is it still great ? Is it free ?
Moreover, is it possible to export the rides in a excel file (time + length) ? After every ride, do you create a map in you googlemap ? Can you create as much maps as you want ?
Thank you for your help, again, it seems to be perfect, hope it is
Hi Gregoire,
Nokia Sportstracker is a free application and it maintains a diary of your workouts. You can export the workout data for a given day to an XML, CSV or Google Earth file. I don’t think it has a limitation on the number of maps.
Cheers!
Hi Sharat.
Thank you for your help, I think that it will be perfect for me. I should export XML or CSV on an Excel file, this is great !
Do you still use your e71 when you run ? Is it still ok ?
And do you have any problem with your e71 in general ? Any disappointment ?
Thank you for your help.
Cheers!
Hi.
I know you may have a lot of things to do but is it possible to gime me some informations (see my previous comment).
Thank you very much for your time, see you soon !
Hi Gregoire, Sorry for not being able to respond earlier as I was on vacation.
Well, to answer your questions, I don’t run that much; just a few walks (about thrice in a week), and since they are pretty much along the same track, I don’t map them often.
Also, my E71 now seems to have a mind of its own – keeps getting hanged and restarting on its own. Tried a factory default reset but not with too much luck. I think a trip to the Nokia service center is now due!
Hi Sharat.
Thank you for your answer, I order the e71
Good luck for the restats, etc…
Cheers !
